In life, exceptional success can be achieved only by those who understand the value of every moment. TIME values only those who value their time.  In 2018, Param Gurudev’s chaturmas was at Rajkot’s Royal Park Upashray. Param Gurudev would incessantly spend 15-18 hours every single day spreading Parmatma’s message. He would deliver profound and enlightening discourses in the morning; there would be special sadhak training sessions for sant-satijis and sadhaks, and he would personally attend to hundreds of devotees who would come for his darshan. He would also grace the homes of several gurubhakts every day to create a new inspiration in their lives. Amidst such a busy schedule, Param Gurudev was unwell one day. He was running a fever because of the exertion, so Param Mahasatijis said, “Gurudev! We request you not to come for the discourse today. We will give the discourse, but you must rest for a day.” After multiple requests, Param Gurudev agreed to rest briefly, but mentioned that he would arrive for the discourse at the designated time.  That day, Param Gurudev reached the discourse hall just 2 minutes after 9.00 am because of his fatigue and tiredness. Until then, everybody in the hall was peacefully listening to bhakti songs. When Param Gurudev arrived in the discourse hall, he folded his hands and respectfully paid homage to the discourse seat, known as Shri Sudharma Swami’s paat. Shri Sudharma Swami was the 5th chief disciple of Bhagwan Mahavir and his spiritual successor – he was the first Acharya or Guru of the current Guru-shishya legacy. The transfer of knowledge took place from one generation to the next through this chain of Guru and his disciples, and hence, the discourse seat is known as Shri Sudharma Swami’s paat, symbolising his legacy and tradition. It is an utmost privilege for every Jain sant-satiji to get an opportunity to sit on this seat and deliver a discourse. After paying homage, Param Gurudev took his place on the seat and before commencing the discourse, he addressed the gathering and said, “Sorry, I arrived 2 minutes late for the discourse today, and my delay caused an interruption to all of you in listening to Parmatma’s priceless wisdom.” On hearing such humble words, everyone in the audience was deeply touched. Param Gurudev further said, “Right now, about 400 people are sitting in this hall. Each of you has disconnected yourself from the sinful activities of worldly life and dedicated this one hour to listening to Parmatma’s teachings. If 2 minutes of your time get wasted, I shall bind antaray karma (karma that obstructs one’s progress) for an equivalent of 800 minutes (400×2). And perhaps, in the future, even I may not attain the opportunity to listen to Parmatma’s teachings for a very long time. Hence, every moment of human life is invaluable. We must try and make each moment meaningful and worthwhile.” The audience would hardly have noticed that there was a delay of 2 minutes had Param Gurudev not apologised to them. But Param Gurudev’s utmost loyalty towards Jin Shasan and his exemplary humility made him confess such a small mistake with childlike innocence and transparency. ‘What will people think? What will they say?’, none of these things mattered to him. He expressed his thoughts without any inhibition. Through this incident, everybody in the audience understood the value of a single moment. An indelible inspiration of becoming as humble and down to earth as the Guru was etched in every disciple’s heart. May we all develop such simplicity in our lives too!
